music is life is music

life is narrated by music. moments are captured by the lyrics, and energy is created by the melodies and beats.  when i look back at my memories over the years, most of them are accompanied by a song that i remember listening to that day. maybe a driving song, an upbeat dance song i grooved to while sweeping the floor, or a beachy acoustic tune we chilled out to while having a bonfire in my backyard in the summer. they all have an audio component to the memory. some even have smells attached to them too, like the smokey smell of burning wood, or the smell of the gas station when i stopped to fill up the car. for me, this makes the memories seem more real, that i can use more than just pictures in my head to help recall the moment. then, when you least expect it, you hear that song or smell that smell, and are instantly transported back to that time in your life. it's neat how we make associations like that.

a new site that is taking advantage of those connections is music is life is music. it is a microsite promoting the 53rd annual grammy awards in an interesting and engaging way. you go to the site and tag a certain location with a song, and can leave a note about your memory from that location. it's public, so you can read other people's tags and they can read yours. i went ahead and did a tag of my own:

of course, tagging humber with "butterfly" by crazy town - our class song! this microsite is a cool way to  start your 'audio autobiography' as they put it on the website, and to see other people's and hear their stories. it is a worldwide thing, so you can hear people's songs from all over. from the about section:

this is great for the grammys because it really shows how music brings people together and how you can share your journey with others through music. it is also available as an app for android and iphone. visit the site and tag a location with your song and memory, you may be surprised to see what songs are in the same location as yours! http://musicislifeismusic.com
